Summer Workshop Questions
1. Will I be reimbursed for travel to the summer workshop?
Yes. We will pay for your travel to the workshop at the beginning of the workshop and back from the workshop at the end. If you choose to drive anywhere during the workshop, you will not be reimbursed for that mileage.
2. What about our meals during the summer workshop?
The costs of meals while attending the workshop are provided by the project.
3. Where will we be staying during the summer workshops?
Housing will be available at no cost to participants on the campus of Mississippi State University in the newly built dorms. They have newly remodeled rooms with private showers and will include linens. There will be a power hookup and cable outlet should you wish to bring a TV or other electronics with you. Internet connectivity will also be available in the rooms at no charge.
4. What subjects will the summer workshop cover?
The summer workshop will focus on science content areas, as found in the 2010 Mississippi Science Frameworks.
5. Do I have to attend the summer workshop?
Yes. You must attend the summer workshop.
Program Questions
6. How much is the stipend for the program?
If you attend the summer workshop and complete all of your requirements in the fall and the spring, then you will receive a stipend of $1000.
7. Can we attend another Math and Science Program (MSP) sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education?
You may only attend one MSP program per year.
8. How much will it cost me to participate in the program?
The program will not cost you anything. You will be reimbursed for all expenses related to the program.
9. What are the requirements of the program?
You must attend the summer workshop and complete your project requirements in the fall and the spring.
10. What are the videoconferences?
During the school year, you will be participating in videoconferences with professors and university experts you will have met during the summer workshops, who will offer more content knowledge and will allow for group discussion and collaboration. Videoconference sites are available in every county through the Mississippi State Extension Service.
11. Do I have to be a science teacher in grades 5-8?
In order to participate in the program, you must be teaching science in a k-12 environment. Priority will be given to teachers teaching science in a self contained classroom or a departmentalized classroom in 4th through 8th grade. Special Education teachers who teach science in 4th through 8th grade are also eligible.
